model, macro and sketch

Hello Bingoragers;

As you may have noticed, there have been a few changes to the page. This should make for an experience that is easier on the eyes and your web browser. I have put the poor old Sasquatch background to rest and tweaked the font sizes a bit. The biggest change, however, is that the individual postings now 'scroll', independent of the page. Placing your mouse inside the posting area and scrolling with your wheel button will allow you to view the entire posting (or clicking on the scroll arrows) and then you can scroll down the page to view the previous post. The Bingorage page, now, takes up less real estate in your browser. Let others know about the site through you social bookmarks, like the 'Stumbleupon' buttons at the end of my posts. Thanks.

Let me know how the changes work/not work for you.
I'm off to Deer camp and should have a good story and great pics for yous, later. Here's a link to last year's deer hunt story.

I found a cool "instructable" to help my cheap digital camera take "macro-focus" photographs. The resolution is so good that you can see some dust and crud in sharp focus on the beaded fish-fly, below. Click to see the detail.

The Great Forgetting

Visionmaker Film Festival

Tim Giago article.

New works and collaboration by Brent Micheal Davids
"A composer of Quapaw and Cherokee lineage, Dr. Louis Wayne Ballard (July 8, 1931 — February 9, 2007) dedicated his life to Native American music and musicians. At the time of Dr. Ballard’s passing, he was in the midst of completing the first movement of a new work for internationally-renown pianist Emanuele Arciuli and the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. After some investigation and consideration, pianist Arciuli and conductor Mario Venzago offered composer Brent Michael Davids the opportunity to complete Dr. Ballard’s Indiana Concerto with the blessings of Dr. Ballard’s family."

"Indian' and 'future' usually don't wind up in the same sentence," says Northern Cheyenne artist Bently Spang.
Spang aims to bring the Native American image into the future. Last Friday, he convened Tekcno Powwow II: The Return of the Funk, a performance powwow at Colorado College."

BLM lawsuit.
"Cobell, a Blackfoot Indian from Montana, is lead plaintiff in a massive class-action lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Interior, demanding an accounting for nearly 11 million acres that was parceled up and put into individual trusts for Native Americans in 1887 under the Dawes Act. The government deemed Indians incapable of handling the land responsibly, so it administered financial matters.

The bitter legal odyssey involving a major Atlanta law firm is again in federal court as a judge must decide how the government will determine how much is owed to some 500,000 Indians whose land has been leased to timber, ranching, farming, oil and mining operations. Billions of dollars could be at stake."

Random news, resources and stuff:

Abenaki crafts may be recognized
"A solution is in the works that could fix a flaw in a 2006 Abenaki recognition law, setting up a procedure for recognizing tribes so artists can market their work as Native American... The Legislature passed a law in 2006 that recognized the Abenaki as a minority population in Vermont. Soon after, however, it became evident that because the law provided no means for specific bands to gain official state recognition, it failed to meet the federal Indian Arts & Crafts Board standards to allow artists to sell their wares as Native American-made."

Native American Day celebration at Crazy Horse Memorial; Monday, Oct. 8, 2007.
"The South Dakota Legislature established the holiday in 1989. Crazy Horse, the private nonprofit memorial honoring all North American tribes, celebrates the day with educational and cultural events to encourage harmony and understanding between people and nations."

"First Nations Films through Motion Visual creates award-winning television documentary films for, by and about First Nations people. Our exclusive and affordable programs are distributed to schools, universities, libraries, organizations, and other educational groups and institutions. These films are cherished by educators throughout the world."

Another great podcast, like an episodic DVD commentary for Battlestar Galactica.

"Woodland Cree First Nation (WCFN) Challenges Alberta's Policy on Oil Sands Tenures and Development"."The Judicial Review Application to the court seeks a ruling that will require Alberta to hold meaningful consultation with WCFN about the granting of all oil and gas leases. The First Nation is also asking that the court orders a halt to the Energy Utilities Board approval of the next project in the area, the Carmon Creek Project by Shell Canada Limited."

World Indigenous Television Broadcasters Conference.

Bunky Echo-Hawk takes the stage with live painting.
"... Echo-Hawk invited audience members to suggest themes to be incorporated into his spontaneously-created painting. "I never know what I'm going to paint," he said.
He invited the audience to call out suggestions to be written down and put in one of two hats - one for issues facing Native Americans and the other for words that described modern mainstream America. The former received suggestions ranging from "domestic violence" and "identity" to "mascots" and "Disney's Pocahontas." Into the second hat went "fast food," "immigration" and "Britney Spears," as well as "democracy" and "diversity."

Who told you these things?

Tell your truth to media
"Perception is reality", "Truth is an ally" "Perception becomes public policy, always" These important messages are worth repeating and should become the mantra for all Indian nations. Indian country leadership can consider devoting time and resources to existing consortiums, such as the American Indian Policy and Media Initiative, which aim to overcome the perilous work of hostile (or just lazy) media."
