Mourning Mask, with bronze mount

carved cedar mask, with horse hair, by Eric Keast, Broken Vulture Art
carved cedar mask, with horse hair, on bronze mounting; by Eric Keast, Broken Vulture Art

I had posted an image of this mask, previously, that was a scan of a B/W photo. I wanted to let people get an idea of what the original colour was. I didn't think that the slide scanning process would pan out, but it has worked suprisingly well, for some of the slides. I would like to thank Ryan at the UMAYC in Fort Frances for letting me use his (much better) scanner to digitize some of my old pics and slides.(There's a link to his blog in my Good Stuff sidebar.) This should let me post some more of the Minneapolis material than I have been able to, so far.

New poll feature

I had just mentioned the poll, in passing, in the "IE conflict" post. It is located down the left sidebar. My first poll is "What is your favourite medium of Native Art?". I have nine listed media and an 'other' button. If you'd like to add another to the list or leave a comment on the poll, the comment section on this post would make a good spot for that discussion, I suppose. The "vote" and "view" buttons take you to a separate window/tab, but there is a "back" button there.

Be heard!!! Vote, baby, vote! (even if it's an "other" vote)

PS: I have added the Blogger "user confirmation" feature to the comments section, because I've started to receive my first spam comments (sign of web recognition?).
This feature just asks you to type in the letters, viewed in a graphic, to make sure yous human and not a spambot. Don't be afraid.

IE browser conflict with Bingorage.

I just happened to look at my site with 'Internet Explorer', yesterday, and it hadn't loaded right: All the posts are below the sidebar materials, instead of in the 'main body'. I'm not sure why this is, but I'll try to fix it. For now, I suggest using the Firefox browser which is "reading" the site correctly. There is a button in my sidebar, below the poll, which will take you to the mozilla site for Firefox download.

Update, August 22: JLB was right. One post deletion cleared it up. Thanks.
I'd been considering switching templates, tanking my customizations and rebuilding it.
conflict

I still recommend downloading Firefox, for your browser. Lotsa cool add-ons and tabbed browsing.

A painting from this last winter. Not sure what the title on this piece is, but it looks like it should be Merman Brings Gift To His Mergirl. Or some such thing. Acrylic, pencil, spray enamel on canvas board; 2004. Click to enlarge.

I really hope this case is paid attention to.

If you haven't read the story of what happened to Canadian citizen, Maher Arar, on his way back to Canada from vacation a few years ago, please read this.
Take two minutes of your life to read it.
Anyways, Mr. Arar is suing both the Canadian government and the United States government for sending him to Syria to be tortured. The New York Times had an article about the opening of the case and the US government defense of the practice.

Ojibway artist Carl Beam dead.

I had originally been introduced to Carl Beam through his collage, but he had a wide variety of media that he worked in. He won the (Canada Council for the arts)Governor General's Award in Visual and Media Arts this year. CBC story

Mourning Mask

Mourning Mask
This mask was carved while I was doing some prep work for an Olympic Penninsula gallery show by Ed Archie Noisecat (Salish woodcarver), while he was still living in MN and I had access to his collection of carving adzes, knives and this good west coast yellow cedar. Ed introduced me to the guys at Anurag Bronze Foundry, too. Unfortunately, this mask was lost in a car fire. Yellow cedar, various horsehair, paua abalone shell, wax finish. This scan mas made from a Joe Allen photograph.

Cedar mask carved by Eric Keast

Tayoyateduta Mask

"Little Crow" Molded, cast, finished and installed by Anurag Art Bronze Foundry (my first gig with them) for Ed Archie Noisecat/MPLS Parks. The bronze was molded from a red cedar original carving that was about 4 feet high, 3.5 feet wide and about 1.5 feet deep! Extra long Horsehair had to be found to provide the mask's bangs (I haven't seen it recently, but I imagine the hair needs to be replaced.) Bronze mask now sits on the west side of Minnehaha Falls in Minneapolis. When the statue was being installed, the city of minneapolis was convinced by one of the crew that we needed to be on site to provide security, so Anurag Art were the first folks to set up tipis or camp in Minnehaha park for quite some time; we kept the raccoons and potential vandals at bay. If the guys see this and wanna make any corrections, comments, etcetera; please do.

Winners of the first Bingorage! contest. :-)

Congratulations to the first two winners of the Bingorage Online Art giveaway: "Jade Leone" from Seabeck, WA, USA and "Ogimakwee" from International Falls,MN, USA (just across the river from me. :)

How I made the draw: I counted up the number of entries and assigned each entrant a number, then went to random.org and used their random integer generator to pick two numbers, then matched the results against the list.

I'll be mailing the two paintings out ina few days, after I borrow a digital camera to post pics of the paintings to be sent. My cam still won't work, no matter how hard I smack it on the desk.

Other projects: Scanned some old pics, will use to post in this blog. I am working on a major project in my other blog (dripandspew.blogspot.com): Unravelling the works of the Oracle of Lampi Road or some other such title. I've posted a sample of his work there, but need some time to transcribe some of his "posts" and research his history a bit.

Alright... later.
:Eric

An open letter

No guarantee that anyone will pay any attention, but this letter was sent to: The Whitehouse, Paul Martin, Dalton McGinty (sp?), Mn senators Dayton and Coleman, MN governor Tim Pawlenty, Star Tribune (MN), MN Daily (UofM paper), CBC (general contact), CNN, As It Happens CBC radio show. I will be sending copies to other Canadian and American politicians and media outlets, shortly.

Two years ago, in the hysteria surrounding the discovery of a BSE infected cow in Alberta, the U.S. instituted a border-wide ban on the importation of Canadian deer, moose and camels. Yes... camels. Gradually, the rules were changed so that venison and moosemeat (and, presumably camelmeat) could be imported into the USA if it were boned and wrapped in Canada and a USA veterinarian certificate was obtained at the border (in addition to the previously required import and export permits).

I am writing this letter because the cost and hassle of deer-hunting in Ontario (and presumably the rest of Canada) has increased unreasonably in the last couple of years and is hurting both the tourism industry in Northern Ontario and the enjoyment of the hunting experience for American tourists. Specifically, in my experience: a friend from MN whom had been hunting with my father, our friends and I for several years has seen his costs and legal obstacles become increasingly onerous.

Now that the border has been reopened to cattle and the knee-jerk reaction to the initial BSE case has waned, can we please have the additional requirements of venison (and camelmeat) importation to the USA dismissed as well, before they become institutionalized, unnecessarily.

Sincerely.
Eric C. Keast

PS: In addition, Ontario should halt its practice of large yearly price increases for non-resident large-game hunting licenses, before they price themselves and their tourism industry completely out of the large-game hunters market.
