---------------------------------

My father and I went out on Rainy Lake for a couple days fishing and a night of camping. The weather was beautiful, the blueberries are ripening early and cowboy coffee is the best stuff, evar. The fish put in cameo appearances and some were eaten with a pub-style batter. Yum.

I had one serious adrenaline injection on the trip.
After dinner, I threw a minnow on a tiny jig and dangled it under a small bobber, about an inch and a quarter cross.
The lake was like glass and the bobber was sensitive enough to show ripples from the motion of the minnow below.
After one cast, the bobber drifted near shore. I noticed that the bobber wasn't showing any ripples, so I figured that the minnow flew off when it hit the water.
So I started reeling it in.
Whammm!!!!
A Northern Pike broke the water, taking the whole bobber in its mouth, then dove straight down. After a couple short lunges, it spit the bobber out and took off.

That was the best fish of the whole trip and it was probably under two pounds heavy. The bobber had been pulled down to the jig and the line was frayed by the short battle.

On the way to finding a camping spot, Dad and I found a pictograph site on a south facing panel. There is a large moose in the whitish mineral precipitation at the upper left associated with a circular design (see sketch below).
Much of the panel consists of a deep red "wash" over entire portions of the rock face. There are also many finger drags and handprints.

These paintings are found all over the Canadian Shield/Boreal Forest from Quebec, through Northern Ontario, Minnesota and Manitoba. Probably in Saskatchewan and the Northwest Territories, as well. The pigment is made from a heated iron ore oxide known as red ochre, thought to have been mixed with bird eggs, fish oil and other organic binders.

I can only hope that you get out camping in such beautiful surroundings yourselves. It's my privilege to live so close to these places and I have to do it more often.

Papier Mache Bass sculpture for Canadian Bass Championship.

Update: July 6, 06
There is now a gallery link in the sidebar for this project.

Smaller pics click to enlarge.

Fort Frances Canadian Bass Championship

I got the nod to go ahead with this piece two weeks ago and began by experimenting with what would have been one "hemisphere" of a bass form, but scrapped it in order to build the primary shape, "in the round". Later I will add the tail, fins and other details.

After the styrofoam blocks were arranged, I used acrylic paint to bind them together. Not a great idea; it took quite a while to dry and is not a great glue, but it works on the foam. It would have been better to do this with a single large block of foam, but the stuff is quite expensive and I'm doing this on the cheap.

:-)

Starting to saw away at the form. I'll knock the "tail bit" off, and redo it later.
Will update soon; the Bass tournament starts July 23!
The clock is ticking.

I had previously sewn the legs inside-out, then reversed them to be sewn from the inside, through back slit.

As you can see; I wasn't able to properly wrap my mind around the twists and inversions that I had subjected my FrankenPanda leg to... and ended up sewing it on backwards.
I was not about to pull out all that stitching, however, and trimmed the legs to eliminate the cute little foot detail. I'll try not to mess up the next one.

I have been asked: "Aren't you worried about putting your images on the internet?". The worry being that someone else will use them without permission.
I had decided, shortly after starting this blog, to publish my images online using the relatively new "Creative Commons" license versus unmanageable Copyright demands across the web.

I have chosen to publish these images under a "Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 2.0 Canada" license. Basically meaning that you can share and use the pics, with attribution to me; but, not for commercial purposes. I retain copyright for that.

June 21 -National Aboriginal Solidarity Day (Canada) + other stuff

Short history & pics at Turtle Island.Org .

Event listings for Kenora, Ontario.

Announcement at Wawatay News.

plus

Sydney Morning Herald (Australia) article
about whether or not a portrait is a painting, based on the non-painting methods (as well as painting methods) used to create it. I, for one, would call it a painting, because paint went into it, somebody else is filing a legal challenge to its 'painting' status.

Why does that get my attention and why should it concern you?

The 'painting' won a portraiture contest worth $35 000 (Australian, presumably) and the legal challenge is being petitioned by a sore loser. Also; the article has a striking picture of the portrait (of Aboriginal actor; David Gulpilil) that you should see (I will send some emails to check on copyright/creative commons status. So... no pic, here, yet.).

Excerpt:

The striking depiction by Craig Ruddy, which won him the Archibald and the People's Choice awards in 2004, is at the centre of a legal fight on the definition of the word painting.

Tony Johansen, a Kings Cross artist and regular Archibald entrant, says the Art Gallery of NSW Trust should not have awarded the prize to Ruddy because his work is "not a painting but a drawing" and was thus ineligible because it breached the 1916 will of the late Jules Francois Archibald.

June 21 is the Summer Solstice.

Here is a list of solstices and equinoxes until the year 2020.
No; they are not always on the same day and time.

Here is a "scientific" explanation of the solstice.

Here is a description of solstice festival at Stonehenge (No; the stones do not get up and fly at night. At least not when there are people around.).

Update on large canvas, +

Pics click to enlarge.
While I'm taking pics, I'm usually monkeying around with the lighting and settings on my camera, taking dozens of different photos. This way, when I get back to my computer, I can see which looks best, or gives an interesting look at a certain colour in the pic ( or which is most in focus), then will tweak it a bit with my fave photo editor [Irfan View]; free and powerful (You can download photoshop filters off the net to upgrade its capabilities and use it as a media viewer).
This is why there are small differences in colour, light, etc. in the following pics.

Pottery dreams and local strata.

The following blurb was posted (by I) in a google pottery group:

I was an Anthro./Archaeology student throughout university and for several summers in the field.

One of the most intriguing changes in the material culture of the region since the last ice age is the shift from non-pottery Palaeo and Archaic cultures
palaeo points
to the earliest pottery of the Middle Woodland period; a culture that we call "Laurel" (for Laurel, MN).
These earliest potteries were thick, conical, coarse and probably built upside down.

Later pottery became thin, huge and fragile. Seeming impossibly fragile works, textured with cordage, stones, paddles, stamps, polished agates, sticks and and the damp hand.
blackduck pottery shards

Perhaps 200 years ago, the last potteries go extinct, chased away by the spun copper kettles lined with tin, cast iron bathtub-like cauldrons and the occasional pieces of glass.

There is a thin smear of Iroquoian and Siouan pottery just under today's surface; flimsy evidence of historic migrations and escape routes as people were chased north and west by Europe and the beaver trap.

That's why I'm going to start relearning, shaping and firing again.
Just need a still day, bone dry greenware and a lotta hardwood.
I'll post the process as the projects start.

:Eric

I first heard about Urban Shaman from visual artist KC Adams, at an LTTA conference in Toronto.
When I was in Winnipeg this winter/spring, I had a chance to check out their space. Very cool.

I see that they also have an online magazine, ConunDrumOnline.

Update June 07. Finished
The beaded cigarette.

Bonus portrait:

The brick stitch is being expanded with extra and wider beads to maintain the "flatness" of the circle, until the grey and yellow beads are reduced in number to contract the circle into a parasol / mushroom-cap shape.

The "cap" was then stitched together, with beads in between, to bring the edges together.

Then a regular brick stitch is being used to finish off the bottom, with random colour, uniform-size beads.

This brick-stitch project has given me the idea of creating small beaded dolls. The folded, stitched mushroom-cap shape looks like the shoulders and beginning of arms.
