Court Could Limit Exxon Valdez Damages.
"The Supreme Court seemed inclined Wednesday to let Exxon Mobil Corp. off the hook for some of the $2.5 billion the energy giant was ordered to pay as punishment for a massive oil spill in Alaska nearly 19 years ago.
The justices questioned lawyers for the company and nearly 33,000 victims of the Exxon Valdez disaster for 90 minutes, making only one passing reference to Exxon's record profits. The award represents less than three weeks' worth of Exxon profit, which was $11.7 billion in the last three months of 2007."

"... judging by the varieties of construction and materials, any number of different groups - nobles, priests and even commoners - may have built temples, Lucero said, and their temples undoubtedly served their different purposes and gods.
That different groups had the wherewithal - the will, resources and freedom - to build temples suggests to Lucero that "the Maya could choose which temples to worship in and support; they had a voice in who succeeded politically."

Petition opportunity, to save the Woodland Caribou habitat in Canada.
"Canada's Boreal Forest is where you'll find the vast majority of Woodland caribou. But ever-increasing development in Canada's north is fragmenting the Boreal and pushing the Woodland caribou towards extinction. The Woodland caribou is the canary in the coalmine for the Boreal Forest -- protecting their habitat helps protect us all."

An indigenous language dies 'once every two weeks'.
"The Akuntsu tribe of northern Brazil, for example, were first contacted by a Brazilian government team in 1995. They number only six people, who saw the rest of their tribe massacred in the 1970s and 1980s by ranchers who wanted their land. Nobody else speaks the Akuntsu language, and it is likely that it will disappear forever along with the tribe."

The following paragraph is an excerpt from Disciplining The Avant-Garde, The United States versus The Critical Art Ensemble by Gregory Sholette, that includes the story of the ongoing atttack on CAE.

"... It comes as no surprise therefore that those who publicly question aspects of the new, homeland-security state apparatus also find themselves victims of government investigation and intimidation. While certainly not on par with disappearances and torture, scores of artists, journalists and academics, including several high school students, have been questioned recently about alleged anti-American activities by a variety of Federal and local law-enforcement officials. In at least one case, the one that concerns this essay, the U.S. government is aggressively seeking to portray a group of contemporary artists known for their politically provocative, yet legal and Constitutionally protected art, as a full-blown terrorist threat to the national security...

Human Culture Subject To Natural Selection, Study Shows. By studying and comparing "functional, versus decorative" features of polynesian canoes, scientists have found statistical evidence for an evolutionary analogy that seems intuitive, but has "lacked the numbers". This cultural analysis is similar to analyses of the human genome that have been successful in finding which genes are under selection..."

Why would a classroom be brought to tour a police station? Presumably; to see how police officers work, to present police work as a viable career and, in our modern day, present police officers as real people doing jobs and not as enemies to be avoided and feared.

However, the lesson rendered to a Thunder Bay, Ontario class last November, probably presented itself thusly: "Do not trust the pigs. They manufacture reasons to illegaly detain you; especially if you are Native."

Oops. Nice work officers.
"touring the city police station last November with his Dennis Franklin Cromarty Secondary School classmates when he was taken aside and questioned after a plainclothes officer spotted him wearing a Warchief Native Apparel sweatshirt, a brand apparently favoured by some native street gangs...
legal counsel believes the decisions made after the Thunder Bay Police Services' investigation were flawed, from the decision to label the uniformed officer's role as "relatively minor" to the failure to follow procedure set out in the Police Services Act.
"A police officer stood by and watched a fellow officer wrongfully detain, and then illegally search a youth. Such condemnation on the part of a police officer constitutes a neglect of duty and discreditable conduct..."
